17th century 'Farthingale'* style oak dining chairs, with upholstered stuff-over seat and back panel, plus upholstered arms to the carvers. Bespoke made for our Warwickshire client.
*Although we're guilty of using it, this popular modern term was largely dismissed by the author Victor Chinnery, who describes the link between the late 16th and early 17th century Farthingale dress, as having no conceptual significance on the development of this type of chair.
The side chairs have ball-turned front legs with a ball-and-fillet repeat turned mid height stretcher. In consultation with our client, we opted for this design of frame construction, as it enables the chairs to straddle the feet of their pedestal refectory dining table (also supplied by us).
The armchairs (carvers) have bulbous gadroon carved front legs and a low front stretcher. With these chairs normally positioned at each end of the table, there was no need to raise the front stretcher, enabling the full cup-and-cover carved turning to be incorporated.
The chairs shown here, are 'Medium Aged' and finished in our Chalvington range 'Warm Chestnut' colour. The upholstery is included in the prices below, but not the cost of the top fabric. In this instance, our client chose a French made claret colour velour, with matching tassel fringing, to give an authentic aged period look.
